I just feel I need to write this just in case someone manage to read this. I was looking for a fix for sims 3 freezing issue when I chance upon this utility that allows a program to address more than 2gb of virtual memory; CFF explorer. I don't really have the link but you can google. The problem is that 64 bit os are not able to allocate more than 2GB address space for 32 bit programs.
This helps to fix the crash in black mesa; you can google and find that the game is crashing constantly due to a memory leak during loading so I thought it can be use for zero hour since I suspect that it is due to a memory leak.
In contrast, this fix couldn't stop Sims 3 from freezing and stuttering when high detail lots are max out.
Before the fix, I can hardly play a single skirmish game without crashing with 4v4 Hard AI random nations. After the fix, it passed for a single skirmish game under the same scenario but crash thereafter. I am using a 5 monitor eyefinity setup at a resolution of 5400x1920 and an .ini file from zero hour triplemonitor fix (google) to enhance camera view.
Hence, I adjusted the virtual memory on all my disk, (2xSSD and 3XHDD) to 10gb each, making a total of 50gb. I actually played all the 8 player maps (destruction station, death valley, iron dragon, fortress, twilight, whiteout) without a single crash with 4v4 Hard AI using the most taxing generals (tank, infantry, toxin, demolition) because they built the most units. At anytime I reckon there are a 100 overlord tanks on the map and 250+ others on the AI side. I personally fielded 200 units myself and have 6 warfactory.
Besides my game felt smoother and I no longer encountered the problems whereby my units stop moving and than crash in the past. But after playing 6 skirmish games in a row, I finally crash. I think most propably 10gb is not enough so I allocated 20gb, making it 100gb in total. So far I have tried playing as many rounds as I like without crashing regardless of configuration. Note that everything is done in max settings. But I still think it is a matter of time before it crashes. I ain't gonna waste my time to test whether it does so or not.
Below is my setup:
OS:Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit
CPU:4930K OC to 4ghz. (using processor lasso to allocate 3 cores to run)
Memory:Gskill 16GB, 4X4gb 1866mhz, xmp profile, quad channel.
GPU: 2X sapphire 290 tri-x in crossfire.
Motherboard: asus deluxe x79
Storage:1XHDD WD caviar black partitioned into 3. 1XSSD samsung evo 1TB partitioned into 2.
PSU: seasonic platinum 1000watt
My cpu load hardly goes beyond 20% with 5 cores and 30% with 3 core. My gpu is idling all the way at 1-2% but I will still get serious errors without the fix. I think it has become obvious that there is basically a program fault whereby large amounts of virtual memory is required for this game to work for hrs.
I tried to get zero hour to run on physical ram only by disabling virtual memory but crash within 15 mins consistently. This is probably the most ridiculous game I have come across in my life concerning virtual memory usage.
