I am writing to express my agreement with the above poster who stated that adjusting Virtual Memory can be an effective solution to the "Serious error" problem. I too was suddenly plagued with this issue after a month of playing Zero Hour with no problems whatsoever. Then, without warning, as I neared the end of a Generals Challenge, the crashing began, and it continued occurring in every game whenever I came close to completing a challenge. I tried a couple of other recommended fixes, but the one that did the trick was increasing the amount of available virtual memory. I boosted it from two and a half gigs to three and a half, and the serious error crashes instantly ceased. Since then I have successfully played many games without a single crash. So, if you're experiencing these insanity-inducing errors yourself, give this a try; it might be just the solution you need to to restore C and C Generals Zero Hour to its normal glorious working order. And by the way, is EA really as terrible at offering proper support as these posts suggest? If so, all I can say is "Wow"; EA's brand has expanded to include many other studios, and I would have hoped that as they grew their integrity would increase to match their size. In any event, increasing virtual memory worked well for me, so you might want to give it a try. Good luck!

(The following is a re-post of an earlier piece I created to confirm that increasing virtual memory can indeed work to terminate the annoying "Serious error" crashes. I would like to add that 1. Although increasing virtual memory worked well for me, it might not solve every instance of "serious error" crashes, and 2. I mentioned EA's massive lack of support to a roommate and she confirmed what many have said here: That in this way, EA sucks, fully. Given the apparently frequent and widespread occurrence of problems, it strikes me as counter-productive for EA to simply ignore users who purchased Zero Hour and other games in good faith. In any event, the following fix worked for me, and if it works for you too, or if you have used another fix that worked, please email me about it at michael.kottler at gmail.com:)

(One more thing: According to what I have read here, increasing physical RAM will not end serious error crashes - one working solution is, as noted above by myself and one other user, to increase the amount of available virtual memory. But if you're thinking that adding more RAM even though you have plenty already, forget it. Give the virtual memory increase or one of the other solutions listed here a try instead, and with any luck you'll soon be enjoying crash-free Zero Hour. Again, if anyone else here has luck with this fix or knows of any other solution not listed here, please email me about it at michael.kottler@gmail.com - I'd be interested to learn of other methods, not just to satisfy general curiosity but also in case I get another one of these damnable "serious error" messages again for a different reason he he. And by the way, I am amazed that this thread is still alive in 2010!)

Hey guys.

After about 3 hours I solved the serrious problem error. Well at least for me it worked.

i found an error report in my docs/generals zero... and I said this
Release Crash at Sun Apr 11 17:32:24 2010
; Reason Error parsing INI file 'Maps\MD_CHI01\map.ini' (Line: 'Object ChinaPropagandaCenter ')

So using a BIG editor in deleted this line in the map.ini file. It "still gave the same problem but there was another error report reading;
Release Crash at Sun Apr 11 16:37:46 2010
; Reason Error parsing INI file 'Maps\MD_CHI01\map.ini' (Line: 'Object ChinaWarFactory ')

So also deleted this line in the map.ini (using BIG editor) and voila Zero Hour without problems...

I had this same problem. Here is the solution to make it work in windows vista/7 32 and 64bit versions:
1. Make sure you have the latest DirectX 9.0c installed. If you are not sure, simply download it at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43...laylang=en
2. Go to your "User" directory (for example C:/Users/YourName)
3. Open the My Documents folder
4. Find and open the folder named "Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data" (or without Zero Hour for normal C&C Generals)
5. Right click, select "new" from the menu that pops up, and finally select "Text Document"
6. Copy the lines below into the new text document. Save the file as options.ini (remember you're changing the extension from .txt to .ini)

AntiAliasing = 4
BuildingOcclusion = yes
CampaignDifficulty = 2
DrawScrollAnchor = yes
DynamicLOD = no
ExtraAnimations = yes
GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0
Gamma = 50
HeatEffects = yes
IPAddress = 0.0.0.0
IdealStaticGameLOD = Low
LanguageFilter = false
MaxParticleCount = 5000
MusicVolume = 50
Resolution = 800 600
Retaliation = yes
SFX3DVolume = 72
SFXVolume = 64
ScrollFactor = 100
SendDelay = no
ShowSof****erEdge = yes
ShowSoftWaterEdge = yes
ShowTrees = yes
StaticGameLOD = Custom
TextureReduction = 0
UseAlternateMouse = yes
UseCloudMap = yes
UseDoubleClickAttackMove = no
UseLightMap = yes
UseShadowDecals = yes
UseShadowVolumes = yes
VoiceVolume = 78

7. You may have to change the line, "Resolution = 800 600" to your computer's resolution. However, regardless of your true resolution, do not change this unless you need to later. It will be set to the appropriate setting once you choose the option in-game
8. Right Click on your Generals / Zero Hour shortcut or game exe file.
9. In the Compatibility Tab select Windows XP SP3 and click "Run as administrator" option too (if you are not already an admin)
10. Click Okay and run the game.
11. Enjoy!

If the game starts but becomes minimized immediately then you will want to edit the resolution line in your options.ini file. Play with a few resolutions, I've found that 1440 900 is a good one to start it with on widescreen monitors. 800 600 is good for normal aspect ratios. The game will set these to more appropriate values once you change your settings in-game.

I had tried everything under the sun for 3 days to try and make previous ZH downloads work- registry fixes, new cracks, patches, folder name changes and re-installs. Quiet frankly, they stank ad kept on crashing at start-up - a common situation i can see many people faced with ZH having been through dozens of old forums. There seem to be some bad ZH ISOS out there with very poor instructions and missing patches/registry fixes.

My advice, if u have a ZH copy which is giving u allot of trouble then give up on it and try another.

This tmjam2002 install from PirateBay however worked for me quiet easily on windows XP service pack 3. I suppose there is no reason why it should not work for Vista/Windows 7 with compatibility mode to XP.

the link is here:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3343950/__COMMAND__amp__CONQUE...PC_WINDOWS

The torrent seems to be alive from when i last checked. Not many working links to ZH on filesharing sites nowadays so u will just have to stick with this torrent.

Simple instructions i would use for the install as follows:

Use ISO burner software to extract the game. When extracted, go into the GENERALS folder and execute C&C Generals+Zero Hour.exe

Let the game install itself in the normal directory - the C drive.

IMPORTANT PART: Once installed, go to Start, Programmes, EA Games, Generals > click through all of the 6 "reg nycklar" one by one and add them to your registry.

Go to C drive, "Program" folder, (not the Program Files folder- look
closely you will see there are 2.)

Go to EA Games, Command & Conquer Generals, Zero Hour. Launch
generals.exe from Finewolf. Select Single player offline and enter game.

Make a short cut to the generals.exe (finewolf) where u want.

Chill :)

A further post to above, i know that i am using a cracked/pirated version of ZH but hey it looks like from peoples experience that even the retail version was very buggy so sorry EA i wouldn't pay u for thiss**t, even if it's old.

To all out there...

Theres a problem with some units or the AI itself that cause the errors.

So far i realized that as less things are involved in the AI the less/none crashes occur.

Everybody should try and utilize a mod called Remix Escalation. Ive been using it for a month now and have found 0 crashes.

Its the one of the best mods out there with plenty units.

Give it a shot and let me know the results.

I just wanted to enjoy this game as much as possible all this years and now its that time
Hope i was helpful

this works fine with me.... I have completed all the campaigns and never encounter any system crash, used med/1020 res, did the same on my laptop.... it was OK.

A fix for C&C zero hour crash!
Hello,
I had the same problemn and it drove me crazy. Once I figured out the GAME can not handle two different screen resolutions I have had not probems. Make sure your desktop resolution is set the the same as what the game is set to and you should not keep getting the crash if you have patched the game correctly.
thanks, good luck.

I just feel I need to write this just in case someone manage to read this. I was looking for a fix for sims 3 freezing issue when I chance upon this utility that allows a program to address more than 2gb of virtual memory; CFF explorer. I don't really have the link but you can google. The problem is that 64 bit os are not able to allocate more than 2GB address space for 32 bit programs.

This helps to fix the crash in black mesa; you can google and find that the game is crashing constantly due to a memory leak during loading so I thought it can be use for zero hour since I suspect that it is due to a memory leak.

In contrast, this fix couldn't stop Sims 3 from freezing and stuttering when high detail lots are max out.

Before the fix, I can hardly play a single skirmish game without crashing with 4v4 Hard AI random nations. After the fix, it passed for a single skirmish game under the same scenario but crash thereafter. I am using a 5 monitor eyefinity setup at a resolution of 5400x1920 and an .ini file from zero hour triplemonitor fix (google) to enhance camera view.

Hence, I adjusted the virtual memory on all my disk, (2xSSD and 3XHDD) to 10gb each, making a total of 50gb. I actually played all the 8 player maps (destruction station, death valley, iron dragon, fortress, twilight, whiteout) without a single crash with 4v4 Hard AI using the most taxing generals (tank, infantry, toxin, demolition) because they built the most units. At anytime I reckon there are a 100 overlord tanks on the map and 250+ others on the AI side. I personally fielded 200 units myself and have 6 warfactory.

Besides my game felt smoother and I no longer encountered the problems whereby my units stop moving and than crash in the past. But after playing 6 skirmish games in a row, I finally crash. I think most propably 10gb is not enough so I allocated 20gb, making it 100gb in total. So far I have tried playing as many rounds as I like without crashing regardless of configuration. Note that everything is done in max settings. But I still think it is a matter of time before it crashes. I ain't gonna waste my time to test whether it does so or not.

Below is my setup:
OS:Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit
CPU:4930K OC to 4ghz. (using processor lasso to allocate 3 cores to run)
Memory:Gskill 16GB, 4X4gb 1866mhz, xmp profile, quad channel.
GPU: 2X sapphire 290 tri-x in crossfire.
Motherboard: asus deluxe x79
Storage:1XHDD WD caviar black partitioned into 3. 1XSSD samsung evo 1TB partitioned into 2.
PSU: seasonic platinum 1000watt

My cpu load hardly goes beyond 20% with 5 cores and 30% with 3 core. My gpu is idling all the way at 1-2% but I will still get serious errors without the fix. I think it has become obvious that there is basically a program fault whereby large amounts of virtual memory is required for this game to work for hrs.

I tried to get zero hour to run on physical ram only by disabling virtual memory but crash within 15 mins consistently. This is probably the most ridiculous game I have come across in my life concerning virtual memory usage.
